Inhambane is located on the coast in the southern part of the country. It has an area of 68,615 km² and a population of approximately 1.6 million. The provincial capital is also called Inhambane.  The climate is tropical throughout, but more humid along the coast and dryer inland.  The province is also known as the Coconut Republic due to the large number of coconut trees in the province. Inhambane’s soil and climate are ideal for coconut palms – so much so that trees take about five years to bear fruit (as opposed to seven years in other areas), produce for about 45 years and live for up to 90 years.  Inhambane is also the second largest grower of cashews in Mozambique. Other tropical and citrus fruits also grows very well in the area. The long coastline supports much fishing and the Inhambane Bay area is a well-known tourist destination.
